What is Inguinal Hernia?

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common types of hernia. It develops in the groin area (near your abdomen) when the intestinal or fatty tissues push through the inguinal canal located near the base of the abdomen.

Symptoms of Inguinal Hernia : The most obvious sign of these types of hernias is their appearance. The inguinal hernia can be spotted by bulges along the groin and pubic areas. These bulges grow when you stand up and disappear when you lie down. Other symptoms of the inguinal hernia include:

  • Burning & Heavy sensation in groin area.
  • Pain in the groin area when coughing, bending, or exercising.
  • Swelling of the scrotum.
  • Acute pain.

Complications of Hernia

Incarcerated Hernia

An incarcerated hernia occurs when protruded tissue becomes trapped and cannot easily be moved back into place. An incarcerated hernia can lead to a bowel obstruction or strangulation.

Prompt Medical advice is recommended if you have incarcerated hernia.

Strangulation of Hernia

A strangulated hernia is a medical emergency. Fatty tissue or a section of the small intestines pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal muscle. The surrounding muscle then clamps down around the tissue, cutting off the blood supply to the small intestine. This strangulation of the small intestine can lead to intestinal perforation, shock, or gangrene of the protruding tissue.

What is a Hernia Mesh?

Hernia Surgery Mesh

Surgical mesh is a medical device which is used to provide extra support to the weakened area where hernia bulges out. These mesh patches are sewed over the weak spot after pushing the hernia inside. Surgical mesh reduces the chance of recurrence of hernia in future by decreasing the pressure in the abdominal wall. They are generally constructed from synthetic materials or animal tissue.

Dr. Manish Joshi & team will use the most advanced and latest hernia mesh for your surgery.

More information about Hernia mesh can be found on the US FDA website

Inguinal Hernia Surgery Options

Open Hernia Surgery

Depending upon the type of your hernia, this procedure might be done with local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Dr. Manish Joshi & team will make an incision in the area near your hernia and push the protruding tissue back into your abdomen. Dr. Manish will reinforce the weakened area (abdominal wall) with a synthetic mesh (hernioplasty) and close the opening with either stitches, staples or surgical glue.

Most of the patients will be able to start walking a few hours after the surgery and should resume normal activities in a few days. Strenuous activity and exercise are restricted for four to six weeks after the surgery.

Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Surgery

Dr.Manish Joshi & team will make small incisions (key-hole) in patients abdomen after general anesthesia has be provided. The abdomen is inflated with a harmless gas (carbon dioxide), which creates space & allows your surgeon to view your internal structures.A tube with a tiny video camera will be inserted into the abdomen through one of the incisions. Dr.Manish Joshi & team will watch the video monitor in the operation theater & use the surgical tools inserted through the other incisions in the abdomen to repair the hernia.

Dr. Manish will push the protruding tissue back into your abdomen & will reinforce the weakened area (abdominal wall) with a synthetic mesh (hernioplasty). The small abdominal incisions then are closed with a stitch or two, or with surgical tape and are barely visible in few months.

Most of the patients are discharged the next day and can return to normal life in a couple of weeks.Strenuous activity and exercise are restricted for four to six weeks after the surgery.

Hernia Surgery FAQ's

Consult with your doctor about your treatment options. Some hernia can be managed by lifestyle changes, some like Hatal hernia can be managed by medication. Surgery is the best option if your hernia is causing pain/discomfort and impacting your normal life.

  • Preoperative preparation includes blood test, medical evaluation, and PAC, etc.
  • Surgeon will ensure risk free surgery by providing you with all the information about the operation.
  • Clean your abdomen and groin area with mild antibacterial soap.
  • It is highly recommended not to eat or drink anything after midnight or the night before the operation. You can take prescribed medication from surgeon with a sip of water.
  • Medicines such as aspirin, blood thinners, anti-inflammatory medications  may need to be stopped temporarily for some days
  • Quit smoking as it may increase the risk of the hernia recurring.

As with all surgeries, Hernia surgery also has some risks.

  • negative reaction to anesthesia
  • infection or bleeding at site of incision
  • nerve damage
  • mesh infection
  • damage to intra-abdominal organs

Recovery time depends from person to person.

  • Avoid strenous activities & heavy lifting for 6-8 weeks
  • Avoid driving for 2 weeks
  • Eat fiber rich food to avoid constipation
  • Stay Hydrated
